What is shown on the postcard
The image shows the three-story building of the college in the Stalinist Empire style, topped by a rectangular tower with a spire. The facade features the embossed text “ХЕРСОНСКИЙ СУДОМЕХАНИЧЕСКИЙ ТЕХНИКУМ им. АДМИРАЛА УШАКОВА” and a decorative cartouche. In front of the main entrance, a full-length bronze statue of the naval commander stands on a tall granite pedestal. Green trees frame the composition, and pedestrians are visible in the foreground.
Historical note
The history of the Kherson Maritime School dates back to the navigation classes established in 1834. The ship-mechanical college building shown on the postcard was constructed in 1953 on the site of the pre-revolutionary First Public Assembly building, which was destroyed during World War II. The monument to Admiral F. F. Ushakov, created by sculptors L. Rodionova, V. Shevchenko and architects I. Shmelev, Y. Tarasov, was unveiled in front of the main building in 1957.
Present day
Currently, the institution has been reorganized into the Kherson State Maritime Academy (KSMA). The building has preserved its architectural layout; however, in October 2022, the monument to Admiral F. F. Ushakov was dismantled and removed by Russian forces during their retreat from the city. The pedestal currently stands empty.
