This 1973 collectible postcard features a panoramic view of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard in Cherkasy, the main urban axis of the city, developed in the Soviet modernist style.
What is shown on the postcard
On the left, a long five-story residential building (208 Shevchenko Boulevard) features a glazed ground floor, which housed large retail stores during the Soviet era. In front of it is a wide pedestrian zone with lawns, flowerbeds, and low decorative shrubs. In the background, three identical nine-story residential tower blocks (No. 220, 222, 224) stand prominently. In the distance on the right, the monumental House of Soviets (185 Shevchenko Boulevard) is visible.
Historical note
Shevchenko Boulevard (historically Oleksandrivska Street) received its modern layout during the post-war period, following Cherkasy’s designation as a regional center in 1954. During the 1960s and 1970s, the central section of the boulevard underwent major reconstruction. The ensemble of multi-story residential buildings with integrated ground-floor commercial spaces became a model for comprehensive urban development along main avenues in the Ukrainian SSR.
Present day
Today, the architectural appearance of this section of Shevchenko Boulevard remains largely intact. The former Soviet retail spaces on the ground floor of the five-story building now house modern shops, cafes, and financial institutions. The boulevard’s central promenade remains a popular pedestrian green space, connecting Soborna Square with other parts of the city.
