A collectible multi-view postcard issued in 1978, showcasing the modernist appearance of the central part of Rivne (Ukrainian SSR) in the late 1970s.
What is shown on the postcard
The postcard features three color photographs of the urban landscape. On the left, a nine-story residential building on Leninska Street is shown with retail spaces on the ground floor, street traffic, pedestrians, and a passenger bus. On the top right, the wide-format cinema ‘Zhovten’ is depicted with well-kept rose beds in the foreground. On the bottom right, the ‘Budynok Odiahu’ (House of Clothing) department store is visible, characterized by its glazed modernist facade and geometric flowerbeds at the entrance.
Historical note
Leninska Street (now Soborna Street) was the main administrative and commercial thoroughfare of Soviet Rivne. The wide-format cinema ‘Zhovten’ with an 800-seat capacity was opened in 1967 to mark the anniversary of the October Revolution and became the city’s primary cinema. The specialized store ‘Budynok Odiahu’ was a typical example of Soviet commercial architecture of the 1970s, emphasizing glass and steel construction.
Present day
In the post-Soviet era, Leninska Street was renamed Soborna Street. Cinema ‘Zhovten’ underwent reconstruction and was renamed ‘Era’ cinema center, and later ‘Kino-Palace Ukraina’. The ‘Budynok Odiahu’ building maintains its commercial function, though its original modernist facade has been altered during numerous renovations and the addition of commercial signage.
